Would Jesus Hack an iPhone?
Posted by John in Integrity, Toys and Tools on April 17, 2008
I live in South Dakota – a state that AT&T has said that they will not be providing the iPhone service to. I want an iPhone really bad. So bad – that I’ve debated driving the 10 miles to Minnesota where iPhone service is permitted, paying $20.00 to get a Post Office Box and claiming that I’m a Minnesota resident just so that I can have the iphone.
At a church leadership meeting this past week, I was talking to a friend about my lust for an iPhone and he told me about a lawyer friend of his who was living in Sioux Falls and had an iPhone. I couldn’t take it – so I got the lawyer’s name and called him on Tuesday and talked with him for about 20 minutes and he told me how to get the iPhone to work in South Dakota.
At last! I can have the iPhone! I spent a fair amount of time researching the tools needed to hack the iPhone, studying about it and reading the forums. Here’s what I’m convinced of:
- I can hack an iPhone and it will work in South Dakota.
- I can have an account with AT&T so that I’m paying a charge just like everyone else is.
- I can skirt around the issue of the iPhone not being sold to South Dakota by purchasing one off Ebay or possibly even direct from Apple.com.
However, I think there is more to this issue then just having a really great cell phone. I think the issue is big enough that I need to ask myself the question, “Would Jesus hack an iPhone?” The answer comes back every time as no – he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t do it because it would place his character below reproach. He wouldn’t do it because there are other alternatives out there and it’s not important to the work of the Kingdom.
As much as my wordly heart longs for one of those delicious iPhones, I can’t help but cognitively be aware that in this world I need to be constantly on guard for things that will pull me away from the work of the Kingdom. You might not think this is a big issue and it’s probably not – but I think that it warrants a close examination to determine it’s true nature. So, even though I have the knowledge to hack the iPhone – I’m not going to do it because I’d rather be focused on the Kingdom then the best toy on the market.
So – the question is – what would you do? Would you hack an iPhone if you could and why?
