Scanning Celebrate’s DNA: Part 3

9. Tight-Fisted Toolers. At Celebrate we spend the vast majority of our budget on people and ministries. We trim fat and make wise financial decisions so that we can use every possible resource to reach people for Christ. However – we’re not shy about making sure that we’ve got the right tools to do the job effectively and efficiently. We work very hard as a team to cut unnecessary expenditures, but if a ministry needs a tool to reach people, we try our very best to find a great deal and to get that tool. We can’t always do it – but we try very hard! That’s a FOUNDATIONAL part of Celebrate’s DNA.

10. Creative Synergy. We are a HIGHLY creative group and we have an INCREDIBLY creative leader! We thrive on each other’s creativity and we use each other’s creativity to better our ministries and our lives. It’s that creativity that allows us to always be thinking and planning for the future. It’s that creativity that keeps us honest and humble about the God we serve. CREATIVITY is what makes Celebrate’s DNA so awesome!

11. Core Values. In closing this DNA scan out, I just want to talk about the fact that our church is growing at an incredible pace. but the reality is – the number of people that attend the church is not the number that is most important to us. What matters most is that over 2500 people have accepted Christ through the ministries of our church. What matters is that lost and lonely people are finding life and love and positive relationships at Celebrate. What matters is that we live in a community that is still largely unchurched and because of that, our collective heart breaks for the lost in our community. That, in my humble opinion, is the CORE of Celebrate’s DNA.

Scanning Celebrate’s DNA: Part 2

5. Smarty Smarts. As a staff – we’re pretty smart. Not just intelligent, but smart. We are smart enough to know our limitations and to ask for help . . . most of the time. We are smart enough to know what we love and to train others about what we love. We know that we can’t do it all ourselves, so we are smart enough to aggressively recruit volunteers and team members to assist us. We’re smart enough to know that there are things that we don’t know and we work very hard at finding ways to increase our skills and abilities. Being SMART is part of Celebrate’s DNA!

6. System Freaks. We LOVE systems. We think about systems, we talk about systems, we dream about systems, we create systems, we kill systems, we adapt systems, we implement systems . . . we LOVE systems! Systems are CRITICAL to the structure and consistency of each of our ministries at the church. Systems are what allows us to grow and to accomplish the Vision of our church! (The vision of Celebrate is to reach THOUSANDS of people for Christ. To do this we build relationships so that we can learn how to better Love God and Love People.)  The SYSTEMS allow us to have the freedom to do the work of the Kingdom without getting caught up in the red tape of being part of a very large organization! The SYSTEMS is VITAL to Celebrate’s DNA.

7. Leadership Linkers. We don’t ignore each others needs. Whenever a dynamic group of leaders is put together it’s sometimes difficult to lead them. In fact, the natural instinct is to make the assumption that that because they are a leader, they don’t need others. The truth is that even the very best leaders still need good leadership in order to be successful. So we LINK our leaders with each other so that we can meet each other’s needs effectively. That LINKING is something that’s a very special part of Celebrate’s DNA.

8. Team Decisions. We make decisions as a team. We have our Sr. Leadership team and each ministry has a point person that heads up that ministry. But rather then a linear/militarlistic style of leadership, we operate more on a non-linear/social network style of leadership. We work together, we play together, and we make decisions together. That’s fairly unique to Church organizations and it’s something that Celebrate does VERY well. We don’t make decisions alone – not even our Sr. Pastor does. We all work together with our teams and within our teams we make decisions TOGETHER for the good of the church and the ministries which is an awesome part of Celebrate’s DNA.

Third and final installment tomorrow!

Scanning Celebrate’s DNA: Part 1

Let’s be clear, I love working at Celebrate. It’s incredible and it’s something that I am so thankful for each and every day!

I get a lot of questions about what it’s like to be a part of Celebrate. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, here’s just a couple of things that I see in scanning Celebrate’s DNA that makes this church so different than any other place I’ve ever been a part of.

1. Learning for Impact. There is such a high priority on being a learning leader at Celebrate, that learning is something that the staff is constantly doing. From reading leadership books, to pairing off into teams to learn a concept, to individuals taking initiative and partnering up to read and discuss a book. Lots of churches take time to learn, but what makes Celebrate unique is that we are always learning so that we can Impact our ministries and the people who are a part of that ministry. Learning for IMPACT is something that is truly in our DNA.

2. Staff Spotlighting. We share every success with each other! We don’t just recognize the successes, we totally CELEBRATE them! We understand that at times ministry is hard work and that if we fail to reward a job well done, it hurts motivation. So we share in our successes both in our personal and our private lives! That’s absolutely VITAL to Celebrate’s DNA.

3. We’re Cheaters. Yup. I said it. We are intentional about our cheating and we are constantly working at getting better at it. The thing is, we cheat the right things. If you’ve never read Andy Stanley’s book, “Choosing to Cheat” – you’ve totally got to pick it up – it’ll change your life! We understand that if we’re going to be effective in ministry, we have to take care of our relationship with God first, our families second, and our ministry roles third. Sure there are times when the proverbial ass falls in the well and we’ve got to put in the hours to make something happen, but we are very good at making up that time to our families and ourselves after the event is over. Choosing to cheat the right things is part of Celebrate’s DNA.

4. Straight Shooters. We don’t mince words. We call it as we see it. We have the tough conversations with each other because we all want to do the very best we can. Honestly, sometimes it sucks big time to have to recognize that we’re dropping the ball. We get angry with ourselves and sometimes with the person saying it, but the key is that we always know that it’s done in love. Sometimes the truth is the most difficult pill to swallow, but once we do we’re a better church because of it. That’s absolutely KEY to Celebrate’s DNA.

Don’t miss part 2!

Passionates by Joshua Porter

As a technology pastor, I am constantly working to make the mission of the church compatible with the technology that is used in the church. One of the blogs that I read regularly posted this article and I’m just buzzing about how to use these concepts in reaching the lost! Here’s the link to the article – I’d recommend reading it! I’ll probably work through this a bit later and try to make it relevant to to the work that I do.

A couple of quotes from the article that I want to remember for later!

The reality is that people are passionate about some things, and not at all about others. They love some activities and don’t care about others. The activity is what they’re passionate about (not the technology) and when they’re passionate enough they’ll learn the necessary technology as they find appropriate. Passion depends upon the activity in question.

It simply means that technology came along to help them practice their passion better, and so they adopted it because the value proposition made sense to them.

The activity is the thing to focus on, not the technology. Technology enables the activity, and people will get excited about the technology if they’re excited about the activity first and the benefits of the technology has been explained to them. But you don’t make passionate photographers by showing them lenses, you make passionate photographers by showing them pictures that rip your heart out.

A much larger population (although much more fractured) are those people who are already passionate about some activity or other, and can become passionate about new technology as it relates to that activity, but they just haven’t been introduced properly.

In other words, the task is not always to make people passionate about something, it’s to show them how technology (or your product, etc) can make them even better at what they’re passionate about.

Technology is merely the enabler of that activity.

So while yes, you should take advantage of early adopters, learning from them and focusing some of your effort on them, you can’t assume that just because people aren’t early adopters they’re not passionate. Passion is more about doing an activity well than it is about using the latest technology to do it.

I hope Joshua won’t mind me posting these quotes – they are just way too good to not share and I don’t want to miss them later!

General Conference!

Both Cristin and I have survived the quad-annual event called the General Conference of the Wesleyan Church. It was exciting to go through and I must admit that it was a lot of fun!

We left Sioux Falls on Saturday, June 7th via Allegiant Air. The flight was a direct flight from Sioux Falls to Orlando and it was a great flight! The only thing that was slightly annoying was that they do these raffles mid-flight – but other then that – everything was great!

We arrived in Orlando then drove the 50 minutes to the Condo where we were staying. It wasn’t the best condo we’ve ever stayed in – but once I wiped up all the ants on the floor and the toilet – it was okay.

On Sunday we went to the church service and saw all the people. I’m not sure how many where there, but I can tell you that there where far more gray-hairs then there were mohawks! In fact, I think my little faux hawk might have been the only one I saw. I saw a few men and women my own age, including some great friends like David Drury and John Blake, but for the most part it was mostly aging Baby Boomers and retirement-minded Silents who were at this conference. That’s something that totally needs to change!

After Sunday Church service, Cristin and I decided to bail and we went spent some time talking with my parents – it was a great time and we totally enjoyed it! We then went back for the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Meetup and Cristin and I both got our free T-shirts as well as we each got $2,000.00 scholarships to give to someone who wants to go to Oklahoma Wesleyan University next year! If you know of someone who can use this – let me know!

Monday came around and Cristin went shopping with my Mom and Dad and I went back to General Conference with Grandma and Grandpa Calhoun. I really enjoyed spending time with the Calhouns and I am so thankful for the spiritual heritage that they have passed down to me! What a blessing that is!

Monday at General Conference was all business. I loved every minute of it and I hung on every word that was said! It was exciting to see all these people gathered together to work towards making the denomination that I love even better! So great to see this!

I would say that the highlight of Monday was the election of Jo Ann Lyons as the new General Superintendent! That’s right – a woman was elected to help lead our denomination! If you don’t know who Jo Ann Lyons is, just take a look at the work that she’s done with World Hope International! She is a dynamic and fiery woman who God has blessed and who has the leadership abilities to guide our denomination into the future! Very excited about this!

That was General Conference for me. On Tuesday, rather then going to the conference, instead Cristin and I took off to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and had a great day! If you’re just dying to know what happened on Tuesday, check our Keith Drury‘s blog about the event!

Finally we’re heading back to Sioux Falls! The pilot told us when we got on that the weather in Sioux Falls was 62 degrees. That’s a little tough hearing after being in 95 degree weather for the last couple of days, but it’ll be good to be home!

So – that was General Conference. I’ll be at the next one – wherever that may be and I hope that some of the younger group will be there with me! Until next time!

FYI – if you want a better Synopsis of General Conference – you can check out Stevan Sheets website! He did a pretty good job summing it up!
