My Blog Process

I’ve got a strategy for writing my blog that may or may not be working for me. I try to write every day some little ditty that I think is blog worthy. At the the end of three days I go and look over what I’ve written and decide if any of the drivel is worth posting. Sometimes it is – sometimes it isn’t. If it is – I then spend the next couple of minutes working and reading it over before I post it. If it isn’t, then I start my three day tour over again. Unfortunately, I often times find my gaps between posts far too long. When that happens I throw caution to the wind and just post what ever I can find.

I clearly need a better system in place for blogging, but I am comforted in knowing that since I am aware of this need, that I’ll be constantly trying to figure out a better way to do it. So that’s how I do it – oh and I use ScribeFire as my editor – it works really good for me! So how do you blog? What’s your process?

CITRT Discovery . . . I’m Not Alone!

As many of you who follow my tweets are aware, I have a fairly interesting position. I work part-time for Celebrate Church as their network administrator and part-time for the Dakota District of the Wesleyan Church building and upgrading websites for the churches in the district.

As an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Church – I realize that this is not the norm. Like the other ordained ministers, I believe that I’ve been ordained by God, confirmed by Man and called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The difference is that while the vast majority of ordained ministers preach via the pulpit on Sunday morning, I was called to preach the gospel via the Internet.

To that extent, I’ve spent several years studying the culture of the Internet, learning the language of the Internet, and understanding how to reach out to others on the Internet. It hasn’t been easy learning these things, but it has developed inside of me a confidence to that this is what I’m called to do – even when I am comfronted with the knowledge that I have so very much to learn.

One of those learning opportunities happened this week and to be candid it encouraged me so much that I just want to share this. This week I had the opportunity to talk with one of the sysadmins from lifechurch.tv. Lifechurch.tv is in my opinion leading the way in church technology, for a prime example of this – check out Youversion.com – a revolutionary online Bible reader – Lifechurch.tv built this – pretty cool, huh?

During our conversation, my new friend introduced me to the Church IT Roundtable. Basically this a group dedicated to IT professionals who work in churches throughout the world. I can’t tell you how exciting and encouraging that it is to know that there are others who are as passionate about technology and the Kingdom as I am! What a gift – thanks God!

Within minutes of being connected with the site, I found some crucial answers to questions that I’ve been running into in reference to backing up Macintosh computers. As I listened and read the various suggestions and comments, it struck me that I’m not alone and that I don’t have to always figure things out on my own. I totally feel blessed that this group is here and that I have the ability to talk and learn from them things that will help Celebrate and the other churches that I work with grow. Totally stoked and can’t wait to learn from these men and women connected to the CITRT.

Techie Tools Wish List

I’m starting a new list of techie tools that I’m going to try to pick up this year. I’ve started the list with two things – still looking for that perfect digital camcorder!

ZOOM H4 handheld field recorder. It totally looks like a taser – which is why I’d like one!
Quickpod – I totally think this is a GREAT tool!

What else should I put on my list?

Would Jesus Hack an iPhone?

I live in South Dakota – a state that AT&T has said that they will not be providing the iPhone service to. I want an iPhone really bad. So bad – that I’ve debated driving the 10 miles to Minnesota where iPhone service is permitted, paying $20.00 to get a Post Office Box and claiming that I’m a Minnesota resident just so that I can have the iphone.

At a church leadership meeting this past week, I was talking to a friend about my lust for an iPhone and he told me about a lawyer friend of his who was living in Sioux Falls and had an iPhone. I couldn’t take it – so I got the lawyer’s name and called him on Tuesday and talked with him for about 20 minutes and he told me how to get the iPhone to work in South Dakota.

At last! I can have the iPhone! I spent a fair amount of time researching the tools needed to hack the iPhone, studying about it and reading the forums. Here’s what I’m convinced of:

  1. I can hack an iPhone and it will work in South Dakota.
  2. I can have an account with AT&T so that I’m paying a charge just like everyone else is.
  3. I can skirt around the issue of the iPhone not being sold to South Dakota by purchasing one off Ebay or possibly even direct from Apple.com.

However, I think there is more to this issue then just having a really great cell phone. I think the issue is big enough that I need to ask myself the question, “Would Jesus hack an iPhone?” The answer comes back every time as no – he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t do it because it would place his character below reproach. He wouldn’t do it because there are other alternatives out there and it’s not important to the work of the Kingdom.

As much as my wordly heart longs for one of those delicious iPhones, I can’t help but cognitively be aware that in this world I need to be constantly on guard for things that will pull me away from the work of the Kingdom. You might not think this is a big issue and it’s probably not – but I think that it warrants a close examination to determine it’s true nature. So, even though I have the knowledge to hack the iPhone – I’m not going to do it because I’d rather be focused on the Kingdom then the best toy on the market.

So – the question is – what would you do? Would you hack an iPhone if you could and why?

Qik – Steps into the Future

http://www.qik.com/

Have you heard about Qik? Qik is a little piece of software that enables you to stream videos directly from your phone to the Web. Use it to stream engaging videos to your friends in Facebook, Twitter, etc. or as your camcorder to capture entertaining and special moments.

So – this is one of those things that I’m totally fixated on – I love this technology and I love how this works. I’m also totally diggin how it could be used for ministry opportunities. My next step is to get a phone that will allow me to start using this technology. I think maybe this could either be a business expense or at least a really cool toy to play with!
